Grupo Villar Mir, S.L. is the parent company of the Villar Mir Group, a Spanish family-owned industrial group. Its origin lies in the corporate, entrepreneurial and innovative vocation of its founder and Chairman, Mr. Juan-Miguel Villar Mir.

The story of the Grupo Villar Mir began in July 1987 with the acquisition of Inmobiliaria Espacio, S.A. and the construction company Sociedad General de Obras y Construcciones Obrascón, S.A. Since that time and up to date, a series of companies have been progressively incorporated into the Group from different sectors (real estate, ferroalloys, electricity production, fertilizers, construction, concessions, services, etc.) both in Spain and abroad, in many cases under difficult circumstances. A management model has always been applied to these companies based on facing problems and opportunities, always applying professional management criteria, generally maintaining the management teams of the acquired companies -with medium and long-term business planning aimed at reducing costs and improving efficiency, at strengthening company finances and at creating value for the shareholder.

The Grupo Villar Mir upholds the principle of developing and consolidating its presence in the different sectors where it operates, entering into new industries only when directly related to its current activity sectors, with a longterm outlook. Throughout its history, no sale of the main companies has ever taken place.

The Group’s strategy is supported by two main pillars: internationalisation and R+D+i.

Thus, at 2009 year-end, 67.5% of the Group’s employees worked outside Spain and 66.0% of the property, plant and equipment are located overseas. During 2009, 58.1% of sales were placed abroad and 85.7% of EBITDA resulted from activities outside Spain.

Likewise, the industrial processes at the Group’s various companies are generally based on technology developed within the companies themselves, which in numerous cases is sold to other companies in the respective sectors.
