Grupo Villar Mir, S.L. is the parent company of Grupo Villar Mir, a family-owned Spanish industrial group. Its origin lies in the corporate, entrepreneurial and innovative vocation of its founder and chairman, Mr. Juan- Miguel Villar Mir.
The history of the Villar Mir Group starts in July of 1987 with the acquisition of Inmobiliaria Espacio and the construction company Sociedad General de Obras y Construcciones Obrascón, S.A. Since that time and until the present day, a series of Spanish and foreign companies have been incorporated into the Group from different sectors (real estate, electrometallurgy, electric energy production, fertilizers, construction, concessions, services, etc.) in many cases under difficult circumstances. A management model based on confronting threats and opportunities through the use of professional management criteria has always been applied to these companies, generally maintaining the management teams of the acquired companies, with medium- and long-term business planning aimed at cost reduction and improving efficiency, financial strengthening of the companies and the creation of value for shareholders.
The Villar Mir Group holds the principle of developing and consolidating its presence in the sectors in which it operates, entering new sectors only if they are directly related to its present business sectors, with long-term intentions, and never, in all its history, have any of its main companies been sold.
The two main cornerstones on which the Group's strategy is based are internationalisation and R&D&i.
Thus, at 2010 year-end, 67% of the Group's employees were working in countries other than Spain and 73% of its property, plant and equipment were located abroad. In 2010, 67% of revenues were earned abroad and 80% of the EBITDA generated came from activities in countries other than Spain.
Likewise, the industrial processes used by the different Group companies are, in general, based on technologies developed internally and, in many cases, sold to other companies in the respective sectors.
